Plasa Focus. It's a regional show that started in the UK that has come to the states and is in it's third year here.
There's 50-some booths and 60+ manufacturers and dealers represented on the floor in the expo area.
There are educational sessions, some truly educational/informational by designers and industry people, and some that are "manufacturer sponsored" which have educational content, but skew towards that particular manufacturer's product line. But this is nothing new in the landscape of trade shows.
So why is this a good thing? PLASA Focus brings a great cross-section of the industry gear and education brought to those individuals who just can't get away to the big industry shows, be it LDI, USITT, WFX, InfoComm, or NAB. The hard reality is that not everyone can get away to these shows, sometimes it's schedules, finances, what have you.
This show is also a great opportunity for students to come out and see entertainment technology too. The show and general educational sessions are free to attend, right in the budget wheelhouse for students or technicians who are at the early end of their careers.
You can only learn so much about a product by seeing it in a brochure, magazine, or even web video. Seeing it work in person really helps people decide if it's right for them. Talking to people who use them helps even more, and if there's one thing that industry people like to do it's talk.
The next stateside Focus show is in May 8 & 9 in Baltimore. It's been a while since a entertainment technology show has come to that region and we're excited to be a part of it.
We'll see you there!
